Memorial Day: Teaching Little Hearts to Remember

There’s something sweet about seeing Memorial Day through the eyes of children. To them, it often means popsicles, swimming pools opening, cookouts, and a day away from school. But tucked inside all of those fun moments is a deeper meaning worth sharing with little hearts.

Memorial Day isn’t simply the beginning of summer. It’s a day to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives serving our country and protecting freedoms many of us enjoy every single day.

As parents and teachers, we don’t have to explain big concepts in complicated ways. Sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen in simple moments.

Maybe it sounds like:

“Today we say thank you to people who were very brave and helped keep our country safe.”

“Some heroes loved their families just like we love ours.”

“We remember them because they mattered.”

Children understand love. They understand kindness. They understand remembering people who are important.

Maybe today looks like:
❤️ Placing flowers at a memorial
❤️ Looking at American flags together
❤️ Writing or drawing thank-you pictures
❤️ Sharing stories about family members who served
❤️ Taking a quiet moment to pray for military families

As we enjoy the long weekend, sunshine, and extra time with family, may we also pause and remember the reason behind the day.

And if you’re a military family, a veteran, or someone carrying memories of a loved one who served — thank you.

Today we remember.
