Happy Birthday, USA!!

Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom at Preschool

There is just something special about celebrating America with little learners.

This year marks 250 years since our nation’s founding, and while our preschoolers may not understand every part of our country’s history, they certainly understand celebrating, creating, singing, and making memories together.

Here at ABC Academy, we kept things simple, hands-on, and full of play.

One of our favorite keepsakes this week was our “Little Firecracker” footprint craft. Was it process art? Nope—and that’s okay!

Sometimes it’s perfectly fine to create a sweet keepsake for families. Those tiny footprints won’t stay tiny forever, and years from now, parents will smile when they pull out that little firecracker and remember just how little their child once was.

Today, however, was all about process art.

We put out red and blue paint, white paper, and let the children create their own fireworks. No samples to copy. No “right way” to paint. Just little artists exploring color, movement, and creativity. Every painting looked different—and every single one was beautiful because it was created by the child.

To finish our celebration, we made one of my favorite preschool snacks…

🇺🇸 An edible American flag!

With just a few simple ingredients:

  • Graham crackers

  • Cool Whip

  • Strawberries

  • Blueberries

The children spread, placed, counted, listened, followed directions, and proudly built their own delicious flags.

Was it just a snack?

Not even close.

They practiced:

  • Fine motor skills

  • Following multi-step directions

  • Listening

  • Spatial awareness

  • Independence

The best preschool activities are often the ones that don’t look like “teaching” at all.

They look like paint-covered hands.

They look like blueberry smiles.

They look like children proudly saying, “Look what I made!”

As we celebrate 250 years of freedom, I’m thankful for the opportunity to spend my days helping little ones learn through play, creativity, kindness, and curiosity.

Happy 250th Birthday, USA! ❤️🤍💙

Here’s to raising kind, curious, and compassionate little citizens—one playful day at a time.
