Visuals + Sign Language + Oral Language: Supporting Communication the ABC Academy Way

Some of our best learning moments don’t come from sitting still and being quiet… they come from giving children the tools they need to understand, communicate, and feel successful.

Lately at ABC Academy, we’ve been leaning into three powerful supports:

✨ visuals

✨ simple sign language

✨ intentional oral language

And friends… the difference is BIG.

Why Visuals Matter

Little learners — especially our toddlers and young preschoolers — are still developing language. When we expect them to follow multi-step directions using only words, it can feel overwhelming fast.

That’s where visuals step in.

Our First–Then board gives children a clear, predictable plan:

  • First: wash hands

  • Then: eat

No guessing.

No confusion.

Just clarity and confidence.

Visuals help children:

✔ understand expectations

✔ reduce frustration

✔ support smoother transitions

✔ build independence

✔ feel safe and secure in routines

And honestly? They help prevent behaviors before they even start. 👏

Adding Sign Language for Extra Support

We also pair visuals with simple, functional sign language — especially for our younger friends or children with emerging speech.

Some of our most-used signs right now:

👐 clean up

👐 more

👐 all done

👐 eat

👐 open

When we model signs consistently while speaking, children begin to:

  • communicate sooner

  • experience less frustration

  • engage more during routines

  • build confidence in expressing needs

And the sweetest part? Watching their little faces light up when they realize,

“Hey — I can tell you what I need!”

Building Strong Oral Language

While visuals and signs support understanding, we are always intentionally growing oral language too.

At ABC Academy, that looks like:

🎤 narrating what we’re doing

🎤 expanding children’s phrases

🎤 modeling full sentences

🎤 giving wait time for responses

🎤 keeping language playful and meaningful

For example:

Child: “Eat.”

Teacher: “Yes! You are ready to eat your lunch.”

We meet them where they are… and gently stretch their language just a bit further.

The ABC Academy Reminder ❤️

If your group gets wiggly…

If attention spans are short…

If directions need repeating…

You are not doing anything wrong.

Our littles are still learning how to:

  • listen

  • process language

  • follow routines

  • communicate their needs

Visuals, sign language, and rich oral language simply give them the bridge to get there.

And at ABC Academy — where learning is still fun — we will always choose supports that help children feel successful first. 💙
